We are seeking an Intermittent Lecturer who will co-teach the pilot of ENGR 599  (Exploring and Envisioning Equity-Centered Engineering), described below. The successful candidate will report to Tershia Pinder-Grover,Ph.D., the director of the Center for Research on Teaching and Learning in Engineering (CRLT-Engin), and will engage with a dedicated course design team that is a part of CRLT's Foundational Course Initiative .

Course Title: Exploring and Envisioning Equity-Centered Engineering

Course Description: This course provides an introduction to engineering as a socio-technical discipline. Students will examine historical injustices and systemic inequities that shape the current Engineering landscape. Readings, guest speakers, and case studies will highlight how a lack of representation of and/or engagement with underserved and historically excluded populations can lead to inequitable and unjust solutions to engineering problems.  About half of the sessions will be guest-speaker presentations. The rest will be discussion and activity-based. Deliverables will include weekly reflections that will make up a final learning portfolio to showcase individual learning and growth.

This is a  2-credit course, and  will meet on Fridays 10:30am-12:30pm.

Course Enrollment: 13 student cap

This position is 10% effort.  

The person in this position will help design and implement a new graduate-level course ENGR 599 (Exploring and Envisioning Equity-Centered Engineering in the Fall semester 2024. This position will be responsible for:

  • Developing course materials,
  • Delivering course content and facilitating activities related to equity-centered engineering
  • Holding weekly office hours
  • Attending planning meetings with co-instructor
  • Grading assignments and assessments
  • Following-up with students who are missing assignments or underperforming in the course.

The person in this role must possess the following qualifications to be considered for the position:

  • Experience designing, developing, and implementing activities for students related to equity-centered engineering, equitable design, and/or the socio-technical nature of engineering
  • Expertise in the literature related to equity-centered engineering, design justice, and/or the socio-technical nature of engineering
  • Familiarity with best-practices in teaching and learning engineering (teaching experience preferred)
  • Degree requirement: Ph.D. in engineering, engineering education, or related STEM field with a focus on the socio-technical nature of STEM fields
  • A commitment to  inclusive, equitable and accessible teaching practices, as well as an ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
